Corn-Free Xylitol - 250g/500g
Xylitol, also called wood sugar or birch sugar, is a five-carbon sugar alcohol that is used as a sugar substitute.
Xylitol is a naturally occurring sweetener found in the fibres of many fruits and vegetables.
Lotus xylitol comes from birch and is corn-free - most xylitol products are now derived from GM corn.
Xylitol has about the same sweetness as sugar but has less calories (sugar = 4 calories per gram and xylitol is 2.4 calories per gram). Xylitol does not cause a significant rise in blood sugar making it great for diabetics and those with hypoglycaemia.
Xylitol is considered to be tooth friendly - it does not encourage tooth decay and can not be used as an energy source by the nasty bugs that cause periodontal disease.
Studies have shown that xylitol can help prevent ear and sinus infections when used as a nose spray because of its antimicrobial effect and it can also be used as a mouth wash to treat oral thrush/candida.
Xylitol leaves a cool taste in the mouth - it is great in ice-creams, drinks and on cereal. Xylitol does not crystalise like sugar in baking and so will make cookies soft. If xylitol is used in baking it is best to reduce the temperature by 10C to prevent over browning. High doses of xylitol can cause diarrhoea.
Warning: DO not let your dog anywhere near xylitol - it can cause hypoglycaemia in dogs.
